The rates are the rates. So what are you paying for?

Here is the sentence brokers hate to say out loud, after thirty years of renewal seasons: the rates are the rates. Give ten brokers the same census — same ages, same zip codes, same plan design — and the carriers return the same numbers to all ten. Whoever told you they "get better rates" is describing a spreadsheet you could request yourself.

Anybody can sell you insurance. The rates are the rates. What you are hiring is everything around the quote.

So what are you actually paying for?

Three things, none of which appear on the quote. Structure — whether anyone examined self-funding, level-funding, stop-loss and contribution strategy before the quotes were even requested. Our record 2025-04 took an 18% reduction out of a 25% renewal increase for a 180-life manufacturer, and not one dollar of it came from "shopping harder"; it came from restructuring the funding and negotiating direct. The file — the compliance calendar, the 5500s, the ACA filings, the 401(k) minutes; the paper that decides whether an audit is an afternoon or a crisis. The person — who picks up when an employee's claim is denied in February, sixteen months after the sale.

The test that takes one phone call

Call your current broker's office and ask one question an automated tree can't answer — say, "which of our locations is subject to the ACA filing this year?" Time how long the real answer takes and count how many people touch it. That number is what you are paying for, because that is exactly what happens when the question is an employee in the ER, or a letter from the IRS. Around here the standard is simple and thirty years old: you hear back the same business day, and I still answer my own phone.

Why we give the expertise away first

It is also why we publish these articles, run a free ACA audit anyone can use, and write down our case records with client consent. If the rates are the same everywhere, the only honest way to compete is to prove the judgment in public and let you check the standing on BrokerCheck. Value first. The relationship follows. It has for thirty years.

Put the everything-around-the-quote to work on your plan. Ninety seconds to request; same-business-day reply — from me, not a queue.
